The purpose of advanced airway management is primarily to secure and maintain an open airway. This is essential in prehospital and emergency medicine, as an intact airway is crucial for effective ventilation and oxygenation. When a patient's airway is compromised—due to conditions such as loss of consciousness, severe illness, or trauma—advanced airway techniques, like endotracheal intubation or supraglottic airway devices, are utilized to ensure that air can flow freely into the lungs, thereby reducing the risk of hypoxia and facilitating adequate gas exchange.

While administering medications, monitoring oxygen levels, and checking for spinal injuries are all important aspects of patient care, they do not specifically address the primary goal of making sure that the airway is unobstructed and functional.
